The SCOOTER Store Surprises Union Hill Volunteer Firefighter With Scooter

Friday, October 30, 2009 Admin 0 comments
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Hill Fire Department firefighters save
the lives of total strangers on an almost daily basis. It is no surprise they will do
everything they can to change the life of one of their own, volunteer firefighter
Marty Blakely.

During a vacation with his family this summer, Blakely suffered a blood clot, which
led to the discovery of a cancerous tumor and the amputation of one of his legs,
which has confined him to a wheelchair. The fire department held a benefit to help
the Blakely family cover medical bills and raise money to complete home renovations
to accommodate his wheelchair.
As the benefit began on Sunday, The SCOOTER Store and the fire department surprised
Blakely at the Damascus Shrine Center with a three-wheel Revo electric scooter. On
hand from The SCOOTER Store's Rochester operations were Distribution Center Manager
Josh Hernandez, Mobility & Service Specialist Paul Little and Healthcare Relations
Consultant Mike Krym to make the presentation.
The scooter was donated under The SCOOTER Store's "Gift of Mobility" program, which
provides mobility equipment and assistance to those who do not have the resources or
insurance to obtain power wheelchairs and scooters.

Blakely met his wife Mary Ann while working for the fire department where she is the
fire prevention coordinator. He has served as captain, assistant chief and a member
of the board of directors. When he was not volunteering, he worked for Kaman
Industrial Technologies and Yamaha Motor Sports as a demo snowmobile rider.

"Marty is a young man with a young family who is going through an incredible journey
right now," said Fire Department Chief Brian Ball. "A past chief and dedicated
volunteer, he is now in a day-to-day struggle at just 41 years old.
Mobility is a huge issue since he lost his leg. His inability to care for himself
without aid is a major physical and emotional obstacle."

The power chair will help Marty regain his freedom and independence. He can once
again get around the garage to build or repair his vehicles and continue to
participate in the scout events with his family.

"One of our distribution center managers contacted us about Mr. Blakely and the
benefit for his family, asking for a unit to raffle, but we knew we could do so much
more to help," said Doug Harrison, Founder, President and CEO of The SCOOTER Store.
"We started the Gift of Mobility program because we understand that mobility, and the
ensuing independence, is truly a gift. We are so glad to give independence back to a
hero like Marty."

Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002
to help people like Marty Blakely improve their quality of life by assisting in their
independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with nonprofit
groups around the country to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual
wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year to individuals and community service
organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to people with
limited mobility.

What everybody ought to know about the leading Scooter Company plans

Sunday, October 25, 2009 Admin 0 comments
Here is interesting news on a National scooter manufacturing company that will be help Nacogdoches economy by making and selling Electric scooters, of course that includes three wheel electric scooters.

===========

USA's 'only scooter manufacturer' could be in Nac by 2011
By Trend Jacobs
Sentinel Staff

Could Nacogdoches be "The Oldest Town in Texas" and the "Scooter Capital of America?"

Actually, yes, it is very possible. That is if everything goes according to plan, says CEO of the National Scooter Company Greg James, who already owns the Lonestar Scooters store off of North Street.

James told The Daily Sentinel that he is hoping to break ground next March on a scooter manufacturing plant and corporate headquarters after he secures some federal grant money and finalizes negotiations to purchase a portion of Twist N' Go Scooters, based in Seattle, Wash. The company could be pumping out fuel efficient and electric vehicles right here in Nacogdoches by March of 2011.

According to James, who has nearly 30 years experience in the motor vehicle business, there is not a single other scooter manufacturing company that actually makes and sells scooters and other electric vehicles inside the U.S.

While many economists are saying that the country is pulling out of the recession, inflation is expected to drive prices up for the next couple of years due to low consumer demand coupled with high government spending, James said. That could be good news for James who said, "As prices go up, it's going to be painful for consumers and they're going to start looking for transportation alternatives. So I think scooters, motorcycles and other electronic vehicles are a very viable alternative."

The manufacturing side of the company will be moved from China to Nacogdoches, as will nearly every other aspect of the business, including product design, engineering and marketing. He estimates that there will be at least 60 jobs created by the National Scooter Company by the end of the third year, and by the end of the seventh year, James estimates that more than 100 jobs will be created directly and indirectly with domestic suppliers. The short-term employment gain from the construction phase is estimated to add 50 jobs for nine to 12 months.

James said that one employee will remain in Shanghai, China, and a web developer will remain on his payroll in Seattle.

On Nov. 2, James will attend a public hearing at city hall where it is expected that city commissioners will give their blessing for his efforts to obtain the federal grants needed to bring the business to Nacogdoches.

"It's simply just very inexpensive to build things in Asia and the only way we can offset that cost and bring those jobs to the United States is for the federal government to get involved," James said, likening the situation to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company who also received federal grants to help them assemble their motorcycles in the United States with imported parts.

There will also be opportunities for white collar jobs alongside assembly line jobs, and James said that he is looking to partner up with Stephen F. Austin State University to possibly create a co-op and internships down the road.

"I just think this is a really good opportunity for Nacogdoches to diversify its economy. I think the grant funding is a strong win for the community, in that it's outside dollars and will help create new jobs that I think will be a really good match with SFA."

Because the gas powered scooters get such high mileage, 75 miles per gallon and up, and other models will run entirely off electricity, James said he will be eligible for government grants that are aimed to help green industries like his grow.

Eighty percent of the scooters and other products are already being shipped from Seattle to the central and eastern parts of the country, James said, and moving the assembly plant to Texas would offer a more central location for distribution.

Because of a number of logistical advantages, including the proximity to the Port of Houston, and the state and city's pro-business environment, combined with his "strong affinity" for the area, James feels that Nacogdoches is a relatively ideal place to set up shop. One possible location for the company could be the Research and Industrial Park located in the north of town which, so far, has failed to attract any other businesses, and remains little more than an empty lot.

But one of the main reasons James wants to start the business in Nacogdcohes is the low labor costs relative to major urban cities like Houston or Dallas. And once the company is up and running, James expects that suppliers will flock to Nacogdoches, therefore creating even more jobs.

"Job growth is not just going to come from the National Scooter Company," James said. "It's going to come from the suppliers that we buddy-up with. This is exactly what happens with automobile plants, like when Toyota opened a factory in San Antonio. It wasn't just the Toyota jobs that came to San Antonio, it was the glass, tire, steel and electrical jobs. That's going to be the real peripheral growth."

As renewable energy and other sustainable technologies become a bigger part of the country's consciousness and overall economy, James thinks there will be a significant market for high-mileage gas powered vehicles and rechargeable electric vehicles.

James is looking to create innovative modes of transportation that will include large three-wheeled vehicles, collapsible vehicles, five-wheelers, off-road two-wheelers for hunters and street-legal neighborhood electric vehicles. He is even looking into electric motorcycles, and as battery technology continues to improve, James projects that 70 percent of the models manufactured by the National Scooter Company could be electric by 2018.

Get a Three Wheel Electric Scooter like the Kiwanis Club

Last few days ago. We talked about police officers trying the three wheel vehicle.

IT GETS EVEN BETTER.

Here is another interesting article about a three wheel electric scooter for the police:

Club seeking to buy scooter for police

The Westminster Police Department may have a larger presence in the community if a fundraising effort by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Westminster gains steam. The Kiwanis Club is fundraising on behalf of the Westminster Police Department to raise $9,000 that would pay for the purchase of a T-3 scooter.

“It’s quick and easy access to streets, alleys and sidewalks,” said Lyndi McNulty, vice president of the Kiwanis Club.

The three wheel electric scooter is similar to the two-wheeled Segways that were introduced in the early 2000s and is being touted as the “Next Generation Law Enforcement Tool” by the manufacturer, T-3 Motion Inc.

It can reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and is electrically powered, according to the Web site. It’s also quiet, according to Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding.

“It’s pretty stealth. It’s silent in essence. They’ll be able to move around very efficiently,” Spaulding said.

Officers would most likely use it in the downtown business district and neighborhoods close to that area, he said. The police department currently uses officers on foot and bicycles in the downtown area, but Spaulding said a T-3 would allow them to patrol the area faster and give officers greater visibility.

While all Westminster police officers are involved in community policing, Spaulding said, no officer is assigned full-time to the downtown business district where he envisions the T-3 being used most often.

Lt. Patrick Bassler, community liaison officer for the Pennsylvania Avenue area, said the scooter would enable officers to do things they could not do in a police cruiser.“I suspect every community would like to see more police officers. A lot of them operate out of their vehicle, which allows them to get out into the community, but there are some automatic barriers when you’re riding in a 4,000-pound vehicle,” Spaulding said.

The Kiwanis Club began placing change jars in local businesses as one way to start raising the money, and it plans to get some local sponsors as well, according to McNulty. She estimated it would take about 10 months to raise the funds.

=============

We may be seeing a lot of this in the future in the police department. What do you think? Should every police department use a three wheel electric scooter?

I hope you enjoy this article and feel free to share your comments below.

Long and winding road to 'green' motorbikes

Three Wheel Electric Scooter graphic1
Only tentative steps made toward electric and hybrid power

It's a popular misconception that motorcycles burn cleaner than cars: most of them don't.

In fact, the only reason that they spew fewer greenhouse gas emissions into the air than four-wheeled passenger vehicles is because their smaller engines consume less fuel per kilometre than even the most fuel-efficient compacts.

As for smog-forming particulates? They're even worse than the dirtiest cars.

Yes, there are also fewer of them on the roads, and they remain parked throughout the winter, but motorcycle manufacturers — even the ones producing clean cars like Honda and Suzuki — lag when it comes to providing environmentally friendly two-wheelers.

Most motorcycles sold in Canada lack catalytic converters and many still use inefficient carburetors, something cars haven't breathed through since the mid-1980s.

Bikes don't have to be cleaner than they are, as all current models meet North American emissions standards, which are more relaxed for motorcycles than they are for cars, and are not as stringent as current European standards.

In recent years, however, we've seen some tentative steps toward the development at least of more environmentally conscious, alternative fuel motorcycles, using electric, hybrid and even fuel-cell technology. Some of these experiments will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens next Saturday, and the annual Milan motorcycle show next month.

Electric motorcycles are a relatively new endeavour, the most promising examples coming from California-based Zero motorcycles.

The firm's latest model, the street-oriented Zero S claims a modest 122 kg weight — not bad considering 36 kg of that is for the battery pack. The biggest disadvantage an electric motorcycle has is its meagre range between charges: the Zero S maxes out at 80 km. A longer range would mean more batteries, and this poses packaging problems on a two-wheeler, not to mention the added weight.

BMW recently brought back the ill-fated C1 enclosed scooter, at least in concept form. The C1-E uses lithium-ion batteries to supply power to an electric motor made by electric scooter maker Vectrix.

The C1-E, which has a roof and seatbelts, is only a concept designed to contribute to the eSum project (European Safer Urban Motorcycling), which is looking at ways to increase motorcycle safety in European cities, and production is not planned.

Hybrid technology incorporates the benefits of zero-emissions electric power as a supplement to the internal combustion type for clean running in stop-and-go city traffic, while providing the added benefit of a useable range.

The problem with incorporating this technology into a motorcycle that already uses a gasoline engine is that there's not enough space available for the batteries needed for sufficient electric-only operation.

And electric-only operation is the main selling point of a hybrid, be it two-wheeled or four, especially in congested urban areas.

In 2007, scooter conglomerate Piaggio developed a prototype hybrid scooter drivetrain, to be used in the Vespa LX, and the Piaggio X8 and three-wheeled MP3, but it uses the electric motor mostly to enhance off-the-line acceleration. This helps reduce emissions and improves city-driving economy somewhat, as the engine works less when assisted, but the engine doesn't shut off when idling like a true hybrid, and when switched to electric-only operation, range is limited to 20 km.

Yamaha, a motorcycle maker that has also produced automobile engines for Ford and Volvo, introduced the Gen-Ryu concept vehicle at the 2005 Tokyo Motorcycle Show. That outlandishly styled hybrid promised cleaner emissions by using a YZF-R6-derived inline four accompanied by an electric motor, though the technology has yet to make it into a production bike.

"Hybrids are a stopgap on the way to something else," said Honda Canada's senior marketing manager, Warren Milner. "They're not cost effective, and even though they're cleaner, there are batteries that will eventually need replacing."

According to Milner, fuel cell vehicles have more potential than hybrids, but mass production is probably still decades away.

The most cost-prohibitive and least practical method of producing pollutant-free power, at least using readily available technology, is using fuel cells. A fuel cell uses an electrochemical reaction to convert stored chemical energy in a fuel into electrical energy.

This electricity can then be used to power an electric motor, the exhaust byproducts being water and heat, both of which are harmless to the environment.

The most commonly used fuel for this, however, is hydrogen, which isn't yet available by the roadside, and needs a disproportionately large storage tank to attain a reasonable range.

At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show next week, Suzuki will be showing a zero-emissions fuel cell Burgman scooter. The water-emitting scooter boasts a hydrogen tank with twice the pressure of conventional tanks (conventional being used in a prototype sense), which should give it a modest range.

Honda recently introduced the most viable emissions- and fuel-consumption-reducing technology — at least by motorcycle standards — in the 2010 PCX 125 cc scooter. Called an idle-stop system, this electronically controlled feature shuts the engine off if the vehicle remains stationary for more than three seconds. The main component of this system is an advanced alternator, which also acts as a starter motor that re-fires the engine silently after the throttle is twisted to go.

Tested previously in Honda's bizarrely named Crea Scoopy-i 50 cc scooter, this relatively simple system improved city fuel economy by 5.5 per cent, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 5.2 per cent, carbon monoxide emissions by 8 per cent and hydrocarbons by 2 per cent.

"If we apply all the [hybrid] technology but the batteries and electric motors to a normal engine, we'd see a significant improvement in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions," said Honda's Milner.

Prohibitive costs and packaging improbabilities aside, probably the biggest limiting factor in producing alternative fuel motorcycles is the rider.

It's unlikely that most riders care about their carbon footprint, at least while riding their favourite two-wheeler, which most believe is an environmental asset. Most riders think they're doing the environment a solid favour by riding to work, and if we're talking about reducing fuel consumption — and to some extent traffic congestion — they are.

But the fumes emitted by those dual, upswept mufflers are still not up to the standards that they should be, especially if every motorcyclist's wish is to see more motorcycles on the road.

==========

I can't wait till they make it to three wheel electric scooter. Can you imagine how helpful will that be on three wheel electric scooters. Leave some comments and tell me what you think.

Enjoy your three wheel electric scooter and I'll talk to you soon,

Police officers are now trying to use a Three Wheel Vehicle!

Saturday, October 17, 2009 Admin 0 comments
The popularity of three wheel electric scooter in the planet is increasing. One of the best things in a three wheel electric scooter is the stability it provides compared to two wheels. There have been questions if there is really good to use aside from helping disabled persons like the Zip'r Zipr Break down Electric Travel Mobility Scooter

Here's really interesting news researched by Richie Rathsack, Record-Journal staff that PROVES that even Officers will benefit from a three wheel electric vehicle. Check it out:

Southington Officers try out three-wheel electric vehicle

By Richie Rathsack, Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON - Visitors to the Apple Harvest Festival may have noticed a police officer riding around on an unusual three-wheeled scooter - the T3 Personal Electric Mobility Vehicle.

It was on loan from MHQ, a company that provides the Southington Police Department with police equipment.

"It's a product that is fairly new to the East Coast," said Steven Hershmen, MHQ branch manager. "We are trying to get that rolled out and introduced as a more stable platform of vehicle. We're interested in getting feedback about it."
Three Wheel Electric Scooter Vehicle
Several police departments across the country have been using the two-wheel Segway vehicles. But Hershmen says the T3's third wheel adds stability. Instead of leaning to turn the Segway, which can be problematic in a crowded situation, the T3 turns with handlebars, Hershmen said.

"The way that it is steered, the handlebars control the left to right. On the Segway, if you got bumped and the handle goes left, you go left," Sgt. Lowell DePalma said about the T3 vehicle. "The movement doesn't work like that. You turn it with the handlebars like you would a bicycle or a motorcycle."

The electric-powered vehicle's motion is controlled by a throttle on the handlebars, similar to a motorcycle. It does not have a reverse, but officer Michael Kahn, who rode the T3 at the festival, said reverse isn't needed because of the vehicle's turning radius.

Southington police thought the festival would be a great place to try out the new vehicle and had an officer riding it for both weekends.

Kahn, who is also trained on police bicycles, said it was great. He said the T3 has many advantages over a bicycle.

"I'm above the crowd, so you have a lot more visibility," Kahn said as he stood a few feet above many of the festival goers on Sunday. "It really helped on parade day."

A drawback is the price tag, which DePalma said is about $12,000.

DePalma said the department probably doesn't have money in its budget to buy the vehicle, but has received donations from the community in the past for special purchases such as this, and hopes to go that route again.

Lt. Edward Pocock stood next to Kahn as he was on the T3 Sunday afternoon, talking with curious people who came up to get a closer look. Pocock said he was impressed with the T3 operation and thinks it would be an asset to the department. He said the vehicle would be great for patrolling places such as the linear trail or downtown Southington during Music on the Green.

"It's worked out phenomenally," Pocock said Sunday. "One of the main advantages over the bicycle is when you get to your destination, you are not exhausted. Plus you can carry an AED (automated external defibrillator) on there, which you can't do on a bicycle."

He was also impressed with the simple training it takes to operate. Kahn said it was basically just starting it up, trying it out and he was ready to go out.

"It's green, it's practical and really increases the visibility of the officer," Pocock said.

The vehicle operates on a battery that has a 10- to 14-hour charge, which Pocock noted was about the same time as an officer's shift. The vehicle can also be programmed to have a varying range of speeds, depending on the needs of the officer, from 8 miles per hour for heavy traffic areas to up to 25 miles per hour in other areas.

The vehicle also comes with flashing red and blue lights, a siren and headlights for night operation. Hershmen said attachments such as trailers can be purchased for the vehicle, as well.
